Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina has urged the people to vote for her party, the Awami League, at the national elections.

She made the appeal while addressing a public rally in Barguna on Saturday.

“I seek your blessings and urge to elect only those who will represent the boat (the party’s polls symboll) in the polls,” she told the rally organized at the Taltali Government High School grounds in the southern district’s Taltali Upazila.

She said: “Initiatives have been launched for a ship building industry and a ship breaking yard (in Barguna), which will create jobs ... We will see to it that people of this region can live happily.”

Bangladesh will become a developed nation by 2014, said Hasina adding that her administration has adopted a plan envisaging how the country will be in 2100.

“Today, we’ve earned the global respect for Bangladesh as a role model of development. We’ll have to keep it up. So, I want you all to cast votes for Awami League for another term,” she said.

The living standard of the people elevated whenever Awami League came to office, she said.   “I want you to promise to cast votes for ‘Boat’, the election symbol of Awami League, to give us mandate again to serve you.”

Coming down hard on the BNP, Hasina said that the party does not believe in the spirit of Liberation as well as development.

“Khaleda Zia (BNP chief and former PM) is now in jail after embezzling funds meant for orphans. Her son Tarique is convicted of money laundering and the Aug 21 grenade attack,” she said.

Before the rally, Hasina inaugurated 21 development projects in the southern districit6s by unveiling their plaques from the venue.
