Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi calls on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganbahaban in Dhaka on Thursday (Oct 25).Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called China to mount pressure on Myanmar to take back its citizens in Bangladesh.
Her call came on Thursday during a meeting with visiting Chinese State Councillor and Public Security Minister Zhao Kezhi, reports BSS.
Press Secretary to the PM Ihsanul Karim briefed the media after the meeting at PM’s official residence, the Ganabhaban.
“The Chinese initiative will help resolve the crisis,” he quoted the prime minister saying.
Bangladesh is now home to over 1.1 million Rohingyas as some 700,000 fled the country after a Myanmar military crackdown in Rakhine in August last year.
Hasina informed the Chinese minister that Bangladesh held discussion with Myanmar on the repatriation of the Rohingyas and Myanmar has agreed to take back its nationals from here.
“But Myanmar doesn’t act accordingly,” the BSS reported quoted the prime minister saying.
During the talks, Chinese Minister Zhao lauded Bangladesh for opening up the border on humanitarian grounds.
He said China would play a “positive and constructive” role in solving the Rohingya crisis, according to Press Secretary Karim.
Highly praising dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Zhao Kezhi said Bangladesh’s development in recent years is just amazing.
Noting that China itself is a developing country, he said Bangladesh has also been graduated to a developing nation.
Raising the issue of terrorism, the Hasina mentioned her administration’s zero-tolerance policy and recently enacted law to combat cybercrimes.
In response, the Chinese Public Security Affairs Minister said his country is ready to provide necessary technical assistance to Bangladesh in this regard.
