Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina speaking at parliament. File photoBNP acting chief Tarique Rahman, convicted in Aug 21 attack, will be brought back to Bangladesh to face justice, says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Speaking at Parliament on Wednesday, she said that Dhaka has opened talks with London to repatriate Tarique, the son of jailed BNP chief Khaleda.
Her remarks came while responding to a query by ruling MP Fazilatunnesa Bappi.
“We can certainly bring him back and punish him if elected to power again. We seek the blessings of the people as well as their votes so that he can be brought to justice.”
Hasina said she was targeted several times since her return from exile.
“The attack perpetrated by the BNP-Jamaat on Aug 21 was in broad daylight. His (Tarique’s) father Ziaur Rahman was involved in the Aug 15 (1975 Bangabandu) assassination. There’s no doubt his mother (Khaleda) was involved in the Aug 21 attack,” she said.
"No matter wherever he is hiding, I have full faith on Allah that he will be brought back to the country and will be punished," the premier said during a question-answer session in the parliament.
Tarique has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally, where Hasina was the chief guest. He has been given a 10-year Zia Orphanage Trust graft.
In 2016, the BNP senior vice chairman Tarique was sentenced to seven years in jail in a money laundering case.
