Protests for safer roads: Nearly 100 arrested for inciting violence

The initially peaceful protests took a violent turn on Aug 4, when clashes broke out between demonstrators, police and staff of the Awami League office in Dhaka`s Jigatala.The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have started 51 cases since Jul 29 over spreading rumours to incite violence during the student protests demanding safer roads.
As many as 97 people have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement.
Fourteen cases have been filed in the DMP’s Ramna Division and 31 have been arrested. In the Motijheel Zone, 10 have been arrested in six cases while one was arrested in a case started with the Lalbagh Zone police.
Police in Tejgaon Zone started two cases and so far arrested 8 people. In the Wari Zone, two cases have been started against 300 to 400 unidentified people, but only one person has been arrested.

Sixteen others have been arrested in eight cases filed under the ICT Act.
The DMP said the investigations into identifying the perpetrators behind spreading rumours and inciting violence are still on.
“We have made some arrests and identified most of them. No one will be spared,” DMP Joint Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam told Bangla Tribune.
