Bangladesh now hosts over 1 million Rohingyas, after some 700,000 fled Myanmar since August 2017. UNHCRThe Canadian parliament has agreed to declare the violent campaign against Rohingyas a genocide and to call on the International Criminal Court to prosecute senior Myanmar military officials for their role in the atrocities against the ethnic minority group.

The declaration from the House of Commons comes on the heels of a 400-page report from the UN fact-finding mission released last week, reports The Canadian Press.
More than 700,000 Rohingyas crossed into Bangladesh after a brutal counter-insurgency campaign by Myanmar security forces since August last year.
The UN report alleged widespread rights violations, including rape, murder, torture and the burning of Rohingya homes and villages.
The motion adopted on Thursday also endorsed the findings of UN mission that outlined how crimes against humanity have been committed by the Myanmar military against Rohingya and other minorities.
Speaking to the media in Washington, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said, “It’s a very important step for Canada to recognize that the crimes against the Rohingya constitute a genocide.
“We are leading an international effort for justice and accountability for the Rohingya.”
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is scheduled to reach New York on Sunday, is expected place fresh specific proposals at the UN General Assembly.
“She (PM) will place some specific proposals in continuation of her previous five-point proposal,” Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali told the media in Dhaka on Thursday.
