Mourning day observed in missions

All Bangladesh missions abroad observed the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Wednesday with due solemn and by paying homage to the Independence War hero.
It was on Aug 15 that the nation’s founding father was assassinated by a group of junior army officers with almost all members of his family at his home in Dhaka.
The missions organised meetings, offered prayers and showed a documentary on Bangabandhu to observe the day. The national flag was also hoisted half-mast at the missions to show respect to the first president of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has paid glowing tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marking the 43rd anniversary of his martyrdom.

Officers, staff and their family members joined High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali in placing flower petals at a portrait of Bangabandhu at the mission’s Maitree Hall. The High Commissioner earlier hoisted the national flag at half mast, followed by observance of one-minute silence.  

A panel discussion on “Bangabandhu’s Vision for Peace, Stability and Development in the South Asian Region and Beyond” was organised by the mission.

Moderated by Deputy High Commissioner Rokeb-ul-Haque, the discussion was participated by panelists: Prof SD Muni from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Venkat Narayan, President of Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia and Dr Kavita Sharma President of South Asian University.

Syed Muazzem said Bangladesh and India have reached a golden era in their relationships. The foundation of these relations was laid by Bangabandhu.

With support from the High Commission, New Delhi’s prestigious India Empire magazine brought out a special edition with cover page title: Remembering Bangabandhu.

Indian Express, a mass circulation English daily, carried an article on Bangabandhu written by High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali.

The mourning day programme started in the morning when Ambassador Asad Alam Siam and others paid homage to Bangabandhu by laying a wreath at his portrait.
Alternative Director to Asian Development Bank and former finance secretary Mahbub Ahmed and other dignitaries attended the discussion programme.
Siam said it is our collective work to build Golden Bangla envisioned by Bangabandhu.

In Colombo, the mourning programme started in the morning by hoisting flag half-must and laying of wreathe to the portrait of Bangabandhu.



In the panel discussion, ‘Bangladesh Friend’ honour recipient EA Bidyasekara said, Bangabandhu had immense influence over him and his friends.
They established Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Friendship Forum and tried to create public opinion in different Sri Lankan cities against the mass killings by Pakistan occupational force.
Paying respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah said, the killers actually tried to eliminate the spirit of War of Independence by killing Bangabandhu.
He, however, said, they could only kill him but could not take away his learning from the people of Bangladesh.
The envoy also inaugurated Bangabanadhu library established inside the chancery building.

Ambassador Samina Naz and other officials and staff of embassy started the mourning programme early morning with hoisting national flag half-mast.
Samina urged everybody to convert the mourn into power to build Sonar Bangla.
A documentary was shown at the end of the discussion.

In Bangkok, special prayers and a panel discussion were dedicated to mark the day organised at the embassy premises followed by laying wreathe at the portrait of Bangabandhu by Bangladesh community and Thai school children alongside the Ambassador of Bangladesh.
A large number of expatriate Bangladeshis living in Thailand including from UNESCAP and other International organisations, businessmen and Bangladeshi students studying in different Thai universities as well as local Thai people, especially school children participated spontaneously in Bangladesh’s National Mourning Day programme.
In her statement, Ambassador Saida Muna Tasneem condemned the heinous killing of Bangabandhu on 15 August and termed it as one of the most shameful and inhumane assassinations in world history.
She also briefed the community on the various initiatives undertaken by the embassy over the past four years to immortalise Bangabandhu in Thailand and Cambodia.
It includes establishment of a PhD level ‘Bangabandhu Chair at the AIT, Thailand, naming of a prominent street in Phnom Penh, Cambodia after the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and translation of the historic 07 March speech to the Thai language.

Bangladesh mission in Riyadh laid wreathe to the portrait of Bangabandhu and organised a panel discussion at the embassy premises.
Ambassador Golam Mosih in his speech said, had there be no Bangabandhu, Bangladesh would not have become independent.
The foreign ministry is working to bring back the absconding killers of Bangabandhu, he said.
Deputy Chief of Mission Md Nazrul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
