The Awami League government has picked the worst among the academicians and the best among the party loyals for the vice-chancellors (VCs) of the public universities, says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir
“Which is why [anti-government] protest started spreading out at the universities beginning from Dhaka University,” he said on Wednesday (Nov 20).
Mirza Fakhrul was speaking the reporters at his Kalibari residence in the district town.
The senior BNP leader said, “The president and general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) Jahangirnagar University unit have been removed.
“Whereas the VC remained in her post even after allegations brought against her were proven,” he claimed before adding, “Where’s a democracy?”
Mirza Fakhrul said it is difficult for an “unelected government” to establish good governance in the country.
“There’s no parliament in the country as it’s not elected by the people … The system of governance has broken down and Bangladesh has turned into a failed state,” he added.
Mirza Fakhrul said the administration is not performing its duties properly. “Everyone is corrupt.”
Mentioning that it is difficult to fight against fascism, the BNP leader said protests have already begun. “I believe a mass upsurge will remove the government [from power].”
Mirza Fakhrul claimed that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been jailed in cases that are “fabricated”.
“The government is not releasing Khaleda Zia. She has the legal right to get bail which she is being denied intentionally. The government does not want her to get out of jail,” he added.
