A court in Joypurhat has sentenced seven people to death for the rape and killing of a housewife three years ago.
Joypurhat Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Dr ABM Mahmudul Haque delivered the verdict on Tuesday (Oct 22), with the convicts present in the dock.
The convicts are Sohel Talukdar, Afzal Hossain, Rahin, Ferdous Ali, Majibar Rahman, Ruhul Amin and Azizar Rahman.
Sohel and Ferdous, two of the main perpetrators were slapped with Tk 500,000 fine while the rest of the convicts were fined Tk 100,000 each.
According to the case docket, the convicts abducted Arati Rani from her home, gang raped her and fled the scene on Oct 8, 2016. The victim died of her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Her husband, Ujjal Mahanta, later filed a case against the seven convicts under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act with Akkelpur police.
