The incident was reported from the South Sarol village of the district’s Banshkahliu Upazila on Friday (Jun 21.
The deceased have been identified as Jafar Ahmd alias Jafar Member and his younger brother Khalil Ahmed.
Jafar was the ringleader of a robber gang that raided fishing boats in sea, said Md Mashkur Rahman, assistant director (media) of RAB.
Rahman said “A RAB team was dispatched to South Saralpur village after being tipped off about Jafar and his aides gathered there.
“The robbers opened fire on the RAB personnel when the force arrived on the spot. As RAB retaliated, the robbers fled the scene,” he added.
“Later, RAB rescued the bullet-hit body of Jafar and Khalil from the spot,” said Rahman adding RAB also recovered eight firearms and several locally-made sharpen weapons there.
Jafar was accused in as many as 33 cases with Banshkhali police including murder, and robbery while Khalil was in eight cases.
Three RAB members also sustained injuries during the gunfight, said Rahman.
