ChittagongIn Chattogram, a driver of Shyamoli Transport Company was allegedly beaten up by people identifying themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB).
To protest the incident, transport workers and leaders have called a 24 hour strike on 56 inter district routes, including Dhaka-Chattogram. The physically assaulted driver named Jalal was seriously injured by the beating and later died in hospital.
President of District Transport Workers’ Federation, Md. Musa, said, “To protest the killing of the bus driver, a 24 hour strike has been called from Wednesday evening at 6pm till 6pm on Thursday.”
Supervisor of Shyamoli, Azim Uddin, demands: “when the bus was on its route from Cox’s Bazaar on Monday night, seven persons boarded the bus identifying themselves as DB police; they then searched the bus and not finding anything took the driver Jalal Uddin and then beat him.”
While beating the driver they were asking Jalal where he had kept the yaba tablets. Though Jalal said that he did not have any tablets, they kept on beating him. Later, they left injured Jalal on the bus and left.
Around 2:30 am, Jalal was taken to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
City deputy commissioner of police, SM Mostain Hossain, told Bangla Tribune, “I have heard the news; on that night, we did not have any team in that area.”
Many unscrupulous people are engaged in such work wearing civil clothes and we are investigating, he added.
