A woman battling for her life at Dhaka Medical College (DMCH), after sustaining severe burn injuries at the hands of her husband, died on Saturday (Apr 13).
The victim, Rozina Begum, 20, of Joldhaka area of Nilphamari died around 10:50am in the morning.
On Apr 8, she was set on fire by her husband, Md Abdullah, in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.
The incident occurred not long after the tragic death of Feni’s Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
At least 40 percent of her body, from under her neck to her legs was burnt and she was admitted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) a day later on Apr 9.
On Apr 10, she was brought to DMCH for treatment, sources confirmed.
Rozina's mother-in-law, Rozia Begum, confirmed her death over phone.
Her body was being processed to be taken to New Purbapara area of Patgram, she added.
There had been several cases of theft and drug trading against the accused, Md Abdullah, according to police.
According to a confessional statement of the victim, Patgram police station OC Monsur Ali, said: “Rozina and her husband Abdullah, were expecting guests at their house. Right before Maghrib, the victim asked her husband to fix the house toilet. This infuriated Abdullah and he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.”
Locals said: "Abdullah tortured Rozina on a regular basis when drunk. But she stayed in her husband's home for the sake of her child."
Commissioner of No 6 ward in Patgram Municipal Corporation, Azizul Haq Dulal, said: "Rozina Begum, mother of one child, was sent to RMCH and then to the burn unit of DMCH for better treatment. The incident was barbarous."
Patgram police station detained Abdullah on April 8, after the victim's brother filed a case in connection with the incident.
OC Monsur said: "Following investigation, everyone responsible in this important case will be brought to justice."
