It’s found that in mates of the Sylhet prison are delivered drugs when they make a court appearance. The police do not monitor what is being passed to inmates. In addition, there are also lapses in security.
Inmates are given the chance to buy food from outside and talk on the mobile phone.
In the past, there have been instances when prisoners fled from jail.
On Sept 20, 2017, a criminal called Enam Ahmed fled from the Sylhet prison; after bringing Enam to the court, he was lined with other prisoners but when the police were busy putting the others in the van, he fled.
Smuggling of Marijuana has been caught several times and in April, 2017, 150 pieces of yaba were found in the shoes of one inmate.
He used to take the tablets while appearing for court hearings
It’s found that for a price, all facilities from cigarettes to outside food to mobile phones facilities are available.
Admitting several transgressions, Sylhet jail super, Abu Sayem, said: “A person was found to be carrying yaba and it’s believed that the yaba was given to him when he went to make a court appearance.”
The police are looking into it, he added.
“There are CCTVs in front of the jail and if there are irregularities then the police will investigate.”
