Ruling Awami League lawmaker Jafar Alam from Cox’s Bazar-1 has been ordered to leave an Upazila electoral zone in Cox’s Bazr for violating the polls code by campaigning for a chairman aspirant.
The Election Commission (EC), in a latter, has instructed Jafar Alam to depart his constituency by 9pm on Sunday (Mar 17), local election officer Shakhwat Hossain told Bangla Tribune.
The EC also ordered the local authorities to keep the lawmaker confined to his house unless he leaves the area, he added.
Election to Chakoria and Pekur Upazilas under Cox’s Bazar-1 will be held Mar 24.
On Saturday (Mar 16), the EC ordered Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi from Gaibandha-5 and lawmaker Shaimum Sarwar Kamal from Cox’s Bazar-3 to leave their Upazila electoral zone for violating the polls code by campaigning for a chairman aspirant.
Earlier the EC ordered as many as nine lawmakers to leave their constituencies during the first phase of the upazila polls.
It also suspended voting at three upazilas after they deemed existing conditions there would not allow free and fair voting.
