Over large areas of Jamalpur, cotton has been cultivated, which has injected a sense of hope among farmers on the char areas. Cotton cultivation is fast becoming popular among farmers here.
Jamalpur cotton development official, Mohammad Salahuddin, told Bangla Tribune, “On the dry earth of char areas, growing jute, mustard and other crops do not bring much profit and that’s why farmers have focused on cotton.”
Due to bumper production, farmers are happy.
One farmer has spent Tk 7000 to grow cotton on his land and he will sell cotton at Tk 20 to 25 thousand.
Another farmer, who cultivated hybrid cotton, says, “I spent Tk 15000 to cultivate cotton and hope to make Tk 30000.”
Salahuddin said, “The target set this year is 750 metric tonnes which were 650 tonnes last year.”
The production has been excellent this year and due to stable price, farmers will make profit, he added.
“If cotton is cultivated on char lands, the government will save money on import and rely on local production.”
