PMO opens inquiry over Barapukuria coal scam

The Barapukuria Coal Mining Company has sued 19 officials, including the managing director over the disappearance of the coal worth Tk 2.3 billion.The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has opened an inquiry to further investigate the disappearance of some 144, 000 tonnes of coal from Barapukuria mine.
A probe committee has been formed, Energy Secretary Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Muneem told Bangla Tribune late on Sunday.
He, however, did not provide any details on the probe panel.
According to sources at the power and energy ministry, the committee headed by a PMO director general consists of two joint secretary-level officials from the power division and the energy division.
The 525MW Barapukuria thermal power plant in Dinajpur had been running on coal supplied from the mine.
The plant shut production on Jul 22 due to lack of coal supply from the mine, causing a severe power crisis in the north.
A PetroBangla inquiry has already filed its findings while the Anti-Corruption Commission has opened a separate probe.
