Electricity generated from solar energy will cost less than half from those from fuel-fired plants. REUTERSThe government’s target to generate 10 percent of electricity from renewable energy by 2021 may fail as three solar energy projects of Power Development Board (PBD) are yet to get the Planning Commission’s nod.

These three solar energy projects are expected to add 205 megawatt (mw) of electricity to national grid.

Sources at PDB said that lands have been allocated for the plants in Feni, Chattogram and Rangpur.

But, uncertainty looms over implementing the projects as the commission is yet to approve it, sources at PDB said.

Usually, a government project is allocated fund after the ministry approves it.

Speaking to Bangla Tribune, Nazmul Hossain, director to the Renewable Energy Division of PDB, said, “Land has been allocated for three plants. But, we are yet to get the green light from the planning ministry.”

The director could not tell any specific date to start the project.

Experts said the cost of electricity would reduce if power from solar energy can be added to national grid.

Electricity from oil-run power plant costs Tk 21 per unit while electricity from solar energy will cost Tk 9.60 only per unit, according to sources at Power Division.
