A report made by the Bangladesh Bank internal investigation committee has stated that the question raised over the purity of gold kept in the central bank vault is not correct.

The report has been sent to National Board of Revenue, NBR, chairman, Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, on 28 November last by Bangladesh Bank governor, Fazle Kabir.

The report refutes allegations of irregularities in gold deposits. Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Sirajul Islam told Bangla Tribune: “on 22 July, a six member committee was formed with executive director A N M Abul Kashem as the head.”

The report states that the confusion was triggered when ‘80’ was written instead of 40 while describing gold purity since forty in Bengali looks like 80 in English.

On 17 July, a report was published in a paper mentioning discrepancies in gold accounts.

On the same day, it was claimed at a press conference that the gold has not been meddled with since the central bank possesses a six layer security system.

A question was raised over the tampering of the gold ring in the vault though the report clarifies by saying that the on the ring, the VGR number written by a custom house representative was found to be intact.

The report also claims that recording weight can vary since round figures are used in many cases plus the weighing machine’s reading may fluctuate due to the force of wind from the pedestal fan and the constant movement of large coin boxes nearby.

The difference in weight between the number recorded by the bank and the figure found by the customs intelligence is within Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution, BSTI’s, acceptable standard.

Since jewelry is weighed before auction, there is no chance for any unethical meddling, the report added.
