Talks on with Sri Lanka to use its port: BGMEA

BGMEA medial callNegotiations with Sri Lanka are underway to use the country’s seaport to speed up export of readymade garment as well make the process cost-effective, according to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
“A committee comprising of Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan businessmen will be formed,” BGMEA President Md Siddiqur Rahman told the media on Thursday (Oct 11).
He said that currently Bangladesh uses the Singapore port to export apparel and the lead time for the process is a long 26-27 days.
“We are in talks with Sri Lanka to use their port instead which will save us around 10 days in terms of the lead time and increase the turnover as well,” he added.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) President Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, who was present at the media call, said, “We want the two countries to work together.”
“We are also working to increase regional trade with SAARC countries,” he added.
