Representational image REUTERS/FilesA Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) published report shows that there were 96.1 million Internet users in the country in July, whose numbers rose to 98.14 million on Aug 31.
At present, 1,400 gigabytes per second bandwidth is being used in the country. However, the rise of 2 million new subscribers in one month baffles many.
In the meantime, BTRC has imposed an embargo on two phone operators. Consequently, the operators are unable to launch new packages.
The sudden rise of subscribers has puzzled many.
From the first submarine cable, CMU-4 400 GBPS bandwidth is coming with 700 GBPS from second submarine cable CMU-5. The rest is coming from India. The six ICT’s in the country are Summit Communications, Fibre at Home, Novocom, One Asia, Bd Link Communication Ltd and Mango Teleservices Limited.
General Secretary of Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPR) Imdadul Huq Milon, said: “Broadband Internet has not seen any growth; through ISPR, subscribers are using 900 GBPS and mobile Internet users are using 500 GBPS.”
“We are currently in an imbroglio over VAT and until that IS settled, cannot bring down the price of the Internet.
