Website of Prime Minister`s OfficeSeveral government websites, including those of the offices of president and prime minister, and several ministries, have been hacked.
The sites had been shut down in a major cyberattack, purportedly in support of protests against quotas in government jobs.
Authorities, however, recovered the sites by Wednesday morning, which were taken down midnight.
Search results for the sites on Tuesday midnight showed ‘Hacked by Bangladesh’.
A cache of the page showed a message demanding reforms to the quota system in government jobs.
Telecoms and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar said Tuesday night that they were considering two factors.
“Firstly, it may be the work of those demonstrating for reform to quotas. Secondly, not only Bangladesh, the cyberattack happened across the world due to a glitch at Cisco,” he said.
According to Jabbar, the Cisco problem started two days ago. “Those responsible should have been careful and that was not the case. So, the benefit of the time and opportunity was reaped.”
The authorities are looking in to all the aspects, said the ICT minister before adding their priority was to recover the sites.
As many as 25,000 websites of different government ministries, departments and agencies, which were developed by the Access to Information (A2I) project by the PMO, are maintained through a single platform.
