Hours after voting to the Dhaka city corporations elections ended on Saturday (Feb 1), supporters of ruling Awami League reportedly attacked the BNP headquarters in capital's Naya Paltan.
"Local Awami League activists hurled brickbats at the office building around 6pm," witnesses Mohammad Yunus told Bangla Tribune.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was inside the office during the incident, said Yunus, a personal aide to Fakhrul.
According to witnesses, local Awami League supporters took out a procession after the voting ended. When it arrived in Naya Paltan, the BNP activists booed at them. In response, the ruling party activists threw brickbats.
The incident triggered tension on the street in front of BNP offices, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Senior Assistant Commissioner (Motijheel division) Zahidul Islam Sohag.
Police had been deployed, said Islam adding that the situation was under control.
