Hours after his campaign reportedly came under attack, BNP's Dhaka South mayoral Ishraque Hossain urged his supporters to stay calm.
"The attack was a heinous act. Witnessing the wave of people's support for the BNP, the government orchestrated the attack to foil the polls. I am urging leaders and activists to stay calm and not worry," Ishraque told a media call at his residence in Dhaka's Gopibag on Sunday (Jan 26).
Earlier in the day, a group of people attacked the BNP aspirant's campaign from both sides in front of Central Women’s College around 11:30 am
At least 10 people including Ishraque, were injured during the attack, according to Khurshid Alam, chief of Ishraque's polls campaign.
Alleging voters are being intimidated, Ishraque called the people to come to the poll stations without any fear.
"You (people) don't even worry a bit over the incident," he said.
Ruling out the possibility of more attack on his campaign, Ishraque said, "We are fighting for people's rights.
"Even if more attack takes place I won't leave the field. We feared an attack might happen and my leaders and activists protected me during today's incident," he added.
Calming shots were fired during Saturday's incident, Ishraque said that a complaint has been filed with the Election Commission. "No measure is yet to be taken," he added.
The BNP candidate alleged to have got no security as a mayor aspirant.
"Police came to the scene after the attack... I will lodge a lawsuit [over the matter]," Ishraque said.
