File photo of Ishraq Hossain FACEBOOKBNP’s Dhaka South mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain has claimed that some media outlets have misinterpreted the case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) against him.
Mentioning a report run by a TV channel, he said, “The media report says that I have been indicted in a graft case, which is erroneous.”
His remarks came in a media statement on Thursday (Jan 16), after a Dhaka court has framed charges against him the previous day in graft watchdog's case that involves suppression of wealth information.
“I have been served with a notice seeking asset details. The case has been filed as I failed to submit it on time for staying abroad,” he said before claiming there is no connection with any corruption in the case.
He also requested all media outlets to run reports with caution.
“I have been paying taxes to the National Revenue Board (NRB) since 2010. The board has my wealth details. I filed my asset details two the Election Commission twice before the [national and Dhaka City] elections,” said Ishraque.
In his statement, he described the ACC case "as nothing but political harassment".
In 2008, the ACC served notices on Ishraque, the son of late BNP leader and former Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, asking him to submit asset details, including the names of dependents, sources of income and other information of their wealth in seven days.
As he did not comply with the notice, the graft watchdog filed a case with Ramna Model Police Station in 2010.
Ishraq filed a petition with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail about eight years later.
Prior to that, he filed a writ petition with challenging the notices, which was rejected by the court afterwards.
On Wednesday (Jan 15), the court of Senior Special Judge-4 framed charges against him before fixing Feb 9 for hearing witnesses' depositions.
The defence, however, moved a motion for dropping the charges but the court turned it down.
