"My leader has done whatever she considers is good for me. I am happy and delighted," he said on Monday (Dec 30) while interacting with the media at the Dhaka South City Corporation offices.
On Sunday (Dec 29), when the ruling Awami League ignored him and picked Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh for the race to his office, Khokon declined to comment.
Speaking to the media a day later, he said that he would help the next mayor with his experience.
Responding a query on cooperating with the party-nominated candidate, Khokon said, "I have to speak to the leaders and senior politicians in Old Dhaka. Moreover, there must be some legal issues, since I hold a public office with the rank and status of a Cabinet member. I need to consult before taking that call."
The son of late Mohammad Hanif, the mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation, Khokon had sought the ruling party’s nomination for re-election along with contenders such as Taposh and Haji Mohammad Salim, among others.
But the party named Taposh to run for the mayor election to Dhaka South while it stuck with Mayor Atiqul Islam as its pick for Dhaka North on Sunday.
