The Jatiya Party has decided not to contest the by-election to the Chattogram-8 constituency.
It's Chairman GM Quader has instructed the party's candidate Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu to pull out from the race, Presidium member Sunil Shubho Roy told Bangla Tribune on Sunday (Dec 22).
"Bablu has been tasked with important jobs for the upcoming national council. The party believes that it's more important for its senior leaders to play role for strengthening the organisation rather than contesting elections," said Roy, who also serves as political and press secretary to the JP chief.
A total of 475,988 voters are expected to exercise their franchise in the by-election to Chattogram-8 constituency, which fell vacant after the death of Mainuddin Khan Badal.
There are 189 polling centres in the by-election.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Mainuddin Khan Badal, who was elected lawmaker with the symbol of 'boat' as a candidate of Awami League-led Grand Alliance polls died on Nov 7 this year.
The 67-year-old freedom fighter was suffering from ill-health after a stroke last year and was last admitted to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences in India’s Bengaluru.
A three-time MP from the Chattogram-8 (Chandgaon-Boalkhali) seat, Badal was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Liberation War Affairs Ministry in the 11th National Parliament.
