Awami League picks Moslem for Ctg by-polls

The Awami League has finalised its candidate for the parliamentary by-election to Chattogram-8, the seat vacated by the death of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal.
Moslem Uddin Ahmed, the president of the ruling party’s Chattogram South district unit, will contest in the by-polls slated for on Jan 13 with the boat logo.
The Awami League’s parliamentary and local government nomination board picked Moslem in a meeting chaired by party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (Dec 9) at her Ganabhaban residence.
On Dec 1, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the by-election.
According to it, aspirants have until Dec 12 to submit their nomination papers to the returning officer. The scrutiny of nominations will end on Dec 14 while the deadline for withdrawing candidature ends on Dec 22.
The commission said that electronic voting machine (EVMs) will be used to cast ballots for the voting.
On Nov 7, Badal died while being treated at a hospital in India. The 67-year-old freedom fighter was suffering from ill-health after a stroke last year and was last admitted to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences in India’s Bengaluru.
A three-time MP from the Chattogram-8 (Chandgaon-Boalkhali) seat, Badal was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Liberation War Affairs Ministry in the 11th National Parliament.
