Police have dispersed a BNP protest demanding the release of their incarcerated chief in front of the High Court premises.
The activists vandalised vehicles and threw brickbats when police interrupted the demonstration on Tuesday (Nov 26).
Leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliate bodies started gathering in front of the High Court premises since 1pm, blocking roads and bringing traffic to a standstill in the area.
Meanwhile, law enforcers shut down the High Court gates when the protest started while a Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) team ordered them to leave the streets.
“BNP activists blocked the roads in front of High Court illegally. We asked them to leave the street but they didn’t,” said DMP Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Sajjadur Rahman.
He added that at one point they hurled bricks at the police and went left vandalizing cars on their way.
A spot visit showed that at least eight private and microbuses were vandalized during the clash.
Meanwhile, BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman who was present during the clash said that the protest was not illegal.
