Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader speaks to the media following a meeting with joint general secretaries and organizing secretaries at AL chief`s Dhanmondi offices Saturday (Sept 7).More than 150 rebel candidates of Awami League (AL) who contested the upazila election will be served with show-cause notices, says General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
Central leaders, ministers or lawmakers, who were involved in the violation of party decision during the upazila polls, may be on the list, he said on Saturday (Sept 7).
A senior Cabinet member, Quader made the announcement before the media following a meeting with joint general secretaries and organizing secretaries at AL chief's Dhanmondi offices.
The senior AL leader said the renegade candidates would get three weeks to respond.
No sympathy would be shown when it comes to maintaining discipline within the party, Quader warned.
PILLOW, CURTAIN SCAMS PETTY GRAFT
Quader described the allegation of corruption in Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant housing project and curtain procurement for the Faridpur medical college hospital as "petty".
The minister said, "Neither lawmakers nor ministers were behind these. It is nothing huge like the corruption by Hawa Bhaban [during the 2001-06 BNP regime]. No alternative power centre was created during our (Awami League) term to loot [people's property].
"Corruption in pillow and curtain procurement cannot be compared to that of Hawa Bhaban corruption," he added.
Replying to another query, Quader said militancy has not been rooted out permanently from Bangladesh and it has become a global problem now.
“Our law enforcement agencies are always on alert against militancy. Our detectives are capable enough to face any situation,” he added.
