The final resting place of former military dictator and Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad will be decided on Tuesday (Jul 16) after a meeting of the party’s top leadership, said Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga.
He made the announcement on Sunday (Jul 14) while addressing a media call at the deceased chief’s Banani offices.
Earlier in the day, Senior Co-Chairman and Ershad’s wife Raushon Ershad said that he would be buried at the Military Graveyard in Dhaka as per his last wishes. The party leaders, however, protested and demanded that he be buried at a location that would be open to all.
“It has not yet been finalised where party chairman Ershad will be buried. The top leadership will meet on Jul 16 where the final decision will be taken,” said Ranga, calling on the party leaders and activists to remain calm.
Responding to queries on the matter, Ranga said that Ershad has indeed wished to be buried at the military graveyard but the party leaders’ demands will be taken into consideration too.
Ershad served as the leader of opposition until he breathed his last at the Combined Military Hospital on Sunday (Jul 14) at the age of 89.
