A key ally in the 20-party Alliance, Jamaat, helped the collation, which was then Four-party Alliance, to assume office in 2001.Jamaat is in the process of forming a new political organisation. Already, possible names have been proposed to a five-member party committee with Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman as the head.

Several Jamaat leaders have said that the time frame for the new party to be revealed has not been decided as yet. Committee member AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad was in jail which caused a delay whereas another member Nayeb-e-Ameer Mia Ghulam Parwar was abroad.

On Jan 14 last, a few important proposals were sent to Jamaat's central majlis-e-sura members and as per the decision of the sura members, a decision was taken to form a new organisation.

For keeping the forming of the new party a secret to him, Barrister Abdur Razzaq resigned from the post of the secretary general on Feb 15 and on Feb 16, former Chhatra Shibir President Mojibur Rahman Monju was expelled from the party for breach of discipline.

On Sunday (Jun 16), an influential leader of Jamaat, said: “The work to form a new organisation is going on and it will emerge soon.”

An executive committee member added: “There is work to be done on the new name, political organogram and how workers and leaders will be linked to the new party.”

Central Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat, Professor Mia Golam Parwar, said: “I was not in the country for some time and am not aware of the updates, but will get to know the developments soon.”

Party Secretary-General Dr Shafiqur Rahman, observed: “The relevant work has been done and the efforts for a new political wing are underway."
