Ruling Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has decided to suspend its 17 newly-elected leaders over allegations breaching organizational code of conduct and controversial activities.
"As per instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have pointed out 17 newly-elected leaders who are accused in cases and controversies. We are giving them 24-hour to prove them innocent. Otherwise we will suspend them from committee," said BCL General Secretary Golam Rabbani.
Rabbani said it in a media briefing at Awami League president's Dhanmondi political office late on Wednesday (May 15).
Before the media briefing, Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Rabbani discussed over the issue with Awami League Joint General Secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman.
Shovon said: "We will not only take action against the controversial characters but will take action against leaders who tarnished the organization's image."
A total of 16 names have been announced by the organizations among which 13 are vice-presidents.
The names and their allegations are as follows:
13 vice-presidents: Tanjil Bhuiyan Tanvir (crossed age limit), Suranjan Ghosh (crossed age limit), Mohammad Arefin Siddique Suzon (drug addiction), Atikur Rahman Khan (drug addiction), Barkat Hossain Hawlader (misbehave with teacher), Shahriar Kabir Bidyut (violating organizational ethics), Mahmudul Hasan Tushar (affiliation with anti-liberationist party), Mahmudul Hasan (violating organizational ethics), Aminul Islam Bulbul (facing criminal case), Sadik Khan (married), SM Taufiqul Hasan Sagor (family affiliated with anti-liberation forces), Sohani Hasan Tithi (married), Munmun Nahar Boisakhi (married).

One name dropped from the list was- Joint-Secretary Paradip Chowdhury. Allegation was raised against him for affiliation with Islami Chhatra Shibir, which is impossible as he belongs to the Hindu community. He cannot be an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, confirmed General Secretary Golam Rabbani.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed Chhatra League top brasses to solve issue.
However, a source from Chhatra League told the Dhaka Tribune that PM Hasina, also the chief of the student front, has ordered its leaders to drop controversial leaders from its recently announced full-fledged central committee.
