On Monday, after the BNP joined parliament, rumours started to swirl. Political analysts are wondering if this decision to come to parliament will benefit Khaleda Zia or not.
In the evening, BNP secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference that the decision to join came from Tarique Rahman.
Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, told reporters that the step was taken as per the wishes of Tarique Rahman.
At the press conference, Mirza Fakhrul Islam, said: “we think it’s a logical step to go to parliament to raise the issues and carry out the movement on the roads.”
BNP MP from Chapainawabganj -3 Harun ur Rashid, said: “we want to press our demand for the release of Khaleda Zia by going to parliament.”
Reportedly, many were surprised by this decision since only two days ago, the firm position of BNP was to boycott the parliament.
Meanwhile, a leading influential lawyer of the party said with confidence: “Khaleda Zia will be released on bail before Eid.”
There will be an appeal hearing on Zia Orphanage Trust Case on Tuesday, 30 April.
A BNP leader says that the PM, during a pre-election dialogue with opposition parties, promised to release imprisoned BNP workers and leaders but did not keep that pledge.
While four members of BNP took oath, Mirza Fakhrul did not and said at a press conference that he felt embarrassed to talk on the matter.
Some political observers are saying that through this decision to join at the last minute, Tarique Rahman has shown his absolute influence.
Earlier, when Jahidur Rahman Jahid of Thakurgaon-3 took oath, standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, called him ‘public enemy’, and when Sultan Mohammad Monsur took oath, he was called a ‘traitor’.
Head of one of the allies in Jatiya Oikko Front, said: “we had guessed in the past that BNP was trying to compromise with the government; this has tarnished Khaleda Zia’s image and jeopardized the potential of the movement.
