The BNP MPs-elect took the oath to their offices as per the party’s decision, says Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
According to him, the move came to press the demand of party chief Khaleda Zia’s release in Parliament as well as a part of their movement to restore democracy.
Speaking to the media at the party’ chief Gulshan offices hours after four leaders were sworn in by the Speaker on Monday (Apr 29), Mirza Fakhrul said that the MPs-elect took oath on instruction from acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman, who is in a self-exile in London for over 10 years now.
“The party’s highest policymaking forum National Standing Committee gave Tarique the powers to take the decision on the party in a meeting on Sunday, following which he gave the call,” he said.
The BNP does not want to ignore "even the slightest opportunity" to salvage the nation from the current political crisis, said the secretary general.
Asked what the acting party chief decided about him taking oath, Mirza Fakhrul said, “You will know about it in time.”
