Jatiya Party Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga speaks to the media. File PhotoJatiya Party floated mayoral candidate for Dhaka North for the sake polls, not aiming to win, says its Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga.
His comments, made on Wednesday, explain why none of the leaders of the party were not seen during the campaign of its candidate Shafin Ahmed, who was not flanked by any leaders on election day either.
“The candidate didn’t really communicate with us, rather he contested the polls by himself,” said Ranga before adding that the singer-turned-politician didn’t even invite party leaders during campaigns.
“Shafin Ahmed joined Jatiya Party a while ago. But, he is a singer, not a politician. People know him as a singer. Besides no other party leaders showed interest to contest the mayoral polls. Therefore we picked him as the candidate,” Ranga added.
When Shafin was approached on the apparent disconnect with the party top brass, he responded saying, “Everyone was busy elsewhere. Leaders were tasked with duties in their respective areas. It’s not a must that everyone has to be with me.”
