BNP's electoral symbol 'sheaf of paddy'.More than one candidate has received the initial green light from the BNP at most of the constituencies for the races in the general election.
On Monday (Nov 26), the party started handing over confirmation letters to aspirants starting with party chief Khaleda Zia for Feni 1 and Bogura 6 and 7 parliamentary seats.
Bogura unit chief Saiful Islam and Advisory Council member Helaluzzaman Lalu accepted the letters on behalf of Khaleda from Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“We have taken a decision to give our initial approval to two candidates for every seat,” said Mirza Fakhrul. “If a person cannot stand for any reason the other one will have a chance. Our senior leadership will receive candidacies according to their constituencies.”
The law allows parties to nominate more than one candidate initially, but will only allot the party logo to one candidate once it receives the final list of the nominees. Candidacies of the other aspirants will be dismissed.
According to the announced schedule, voting in the 11th national parliamentary election will be held on Dec 30.
The deadline for filing nominations ends of Nov 28 while the last day for pulling out from the race is Dec 9 to.
