A three-time prime minister, Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to five years in jail for embezzling foreign donations made to an orphanage. BANGLA TRIBUNE File Photo/Nashirul IslamThe BNP has blamed the government of neglecting its jailed chief’s health condition and claimed it to be a deliberate act.
“We have been saying repeatedly that her condition is constantly deteriorating. A high-level delegation of the party has requested the home minister on Apr 22 to put Khaleda Zia under her personal doctors’ supervision at her preferred hospital,” senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.
Speaking at a news conference, the BNP secretary general said the home minister had instructed the prison authorities over Khaleda’s treatment following the Apr 22 meeting.
“We heard that the prison authorities forwarded the file to the prime minister’s office and it has been there since,” said Alamgir told the media at BNP headquarters.
He sees ‘a plot behind not providing treatment to Khaleda’. “The government wants to keep her that way so that she can be shut out of the election.”
