Senior BNP leader Rizvi claims that despite a huge police presence, no arrests were made during the two-hour mayhem at the Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence. (File photo)The BNP sees government’s hand behind the attack on Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence, which a senior party leader says was an ‘attempt to taint the peaceful demonstrations’.
“The people are wondering whether the government used its agents to attack the VC’s residence in an effort to disrupt the peaceful protests,” Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media at the BNP headquarters, he claimed that the VC’s residence was attacked in just 10 minutes after a senior Awami League leader arrived on the campus.
“There was a huge police presence when the house was attacked, but no arrests were made during the two-hour rampage,” Rizvi said before adding it was a planned attack.
According to him, the campus was occupied by activists of the ruling party’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League. “Who else other than Chattra League goons dare to attack and rampage?”
Amid clashes between police and demonstrators calling for reform to quotas in public services, a group of unidentified men barged in to the vice-chancellor’s residence early on Monday, before vandalising furniture and home appliances. They also set fire and damaged vehicles parked inside the premises.
Vice-Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman and his family members, however, were unharmed.
Soon after the attack, Akhtaruzzaman told the media that it was an attempt on his life.
