BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. FILE PHOTOThe grenade attack on August 21 is being used to emasculate the BNP, claims party senior leader, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The BNP secretary general made the comment at a press conference held at party’s Naya Paltan office on Monday.
“We feel that keeping the impending election in mind, we should have a dialogue to resolve differences; therefore we ask the government to be pro-active.”
He further denounced the statements that are being given by several ministers and leaders of the ruling party.
The BNP leader also underlined that the prime minister never told any investigating official or lawyer that Khaleda Zia or Tarique Rahman wanted to kill her.
“During her incarceration in 2007, Sheikh Hasina did not lodge any complaint against Khaleda Zia or Tarique Rahman in her statement given to fifth investigator of this case, Fazlul Kabir.”
After the 21 August attack, united calls were raised from the BNP for a proper investigation but Sheikh Hasina was uncooperative, he mentioned.
We condemned the grenade attack and still do so, wanting exemplary punishment of those involved, stated Mirza Fakhrul and added: “we do not want a repetition of such a heinous episode.”
Linking Tarique Rahman to the attack is malicious and done out of political vendetta, added the veteran BNP leader.
The government is manipulating the judiciary to fulfil their political wishes and verdicts are now being fixed by the law minister, observed Alamgir.
Referring to a comment made by AL general secretary, Obaidul Quader, that BNP will be in crisis after 21 August grenade attack verdict, Mirza Fakhrul Islam, said: “this means he knows what the verdict will be and knowing a verdict before it’s delivered can only happen in an autocratic state.”
