Ministry Of EducationIt may sound unbelievable, but it is true that some college teachers in Bangladesh draw a monthly salary of Tk 178.40.
614 Pali and Sanskrit teachers in 227 colleges, where the subjects are taught, draw this amount of salary since 2015.
Principal of Nittyananda Sanskrit College Barun Bhattacharya joined the institution in 2012 with a salary of Tk 149.50 and it went up to Tk 178.40 in 2015 when the government revised the national pay scale.
“Sanskrit and Pali languages are not at all popular nowadays,” he said.
It is difficult to live on very little, but for the sake of keeping the old languages alive, we are hanging on like grim death.
According to Education Ministry data, after the independence in 1971, their salary was fixed at Tk 115 and additional 30 percent dearness allowance was announced in 1977.
When contacted, Education Ministry and Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) sources said the government has taken steps to increase their salary.
Bangladesh Sanskrit and Pali Education Board has sent a proposal, which is in active consideration of the government, said an official at the ministry.
The proposal stipulated that till the new pay structure is declared, the government should increase the salary to Tk 5,000 for college principal and Tk 4,000 for professor.
Meanwhile, DSHE Director Abdul Mannan also put forward another proposal to fix the salary at Tk 29,000 for principal and Tk 16,000 for professors.
Education Ministry Joint Secretary Salma Jahan told Bangla Tribune, “We will seek information from all the Sanskrit and Pali colleges for taking the final decision.”
