Mehrun Runi (L) - Sagar Sarwar FILE PHOTOThe High Court has expressed dissatisfaction as the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)'s progress report on the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder was published in media before submitting it to the court.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman expressed their dissatisfaction on Wednesday after Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder submitted the report before it.

The court said a general perception is created in people's mind if the report is published in media before submission to the court.

As journalists got the report before the court, someone has to take responsibility for it, the court said.

Eight years after the gruesome murder of the journalist couple, the RAB submitted its progress report to the attorney general on Monday, saying that two unidentified men were involved in the killing.

However, the sources at the elite forces could not confirm the identities of the two men, saying that the evidence was found through DNA sampling in the US.

Meanwhile, the High Court bench on Wednesday dropped the writ petition filed by one of the accused in the case, Tanvir Rahman, from its cause-list as the Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder questioned the jurisdiction of the bench to hear the petition.

The petition was filed seeking cancellation of the proceedings against Tanvir in the murder case.

"We are aware of our jurisdiction…As the state raised the question, we dropped the petition from the cause-list without passing any order."

On February 12, 2012, Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar, and his wife, ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi, were stabbed to death in the bedroom of their apartment in Dhaka's West Razabazar area.

Mahir Sarwar Megh, the only son of the couple, was only five years old then and was in his room when his parents were killed.

The double murder sparked a nationwide outcry, particularly among journalists, who have been demanding justice for the slain couple since then.
