Two city corporations of Dhaka have taken an initiative to start a separate division to control Dengue and Chikunguniya. A proposal has been sent to the ministry of local government for the implementation of two separate projects, ‘Communicable Disease Control and Research Department’ and ‘Integrated Vector Management’.

Though the ministry has not given any response as yet, specialists feel that the density of mosquitoes may take a diabolical form in the city within the next few days and this may trigger Dengue and Chikunguniya.

Last year, the Dengue situation went out of control and the matter reached the court. DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon also went to Singapore to gather experience on dealing with mosquitoes. After coming back, he started a department to eradicate mosquitoes.

Reportedly, the manpower at two city corporations are not enough to control mosquitoes.

Sayeed Khokon, observes: “Once the Communicable Disease and Research Department is started, we will be able to design Singapore like Dhaka.”

DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam adds: “We sent a proposal to the ministry but have not received any response as yet; once the project in implemented, mosquitoes borne diseases can be controlled.”

Local Government and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam adds: “We are working for the management of integrated vector diseases and have already made a structure for the ministry.”
