A dummy coach of Dhaka metro rail has been brought from Japan to the capital, officials say.
“The railcar has been brought for exhibition,” said MAN Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, (DMTCL) owning company of Dhaka metro rail.
The mockup coach has arrived at Uttara-based Diabari metro rail depot on Monday (Feb 17), a DMTCL official told Bangla Tribune seeking anonymity.
The MD, however, referred to the Project Director Mohammad Aftab Uddin for more details.
Uddin couldn’t be reached for comment.
According to a project official, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to unveil the mockup coach, which is a half of a railcar, at the Metrorail Exhibition and Information Center within two months.
The exhibition aims to make commuters familiar to metro-rail, he added.
According to media reports, the metro-rail will be opened for commuters on Dec 16, 2021, as part of the 50th Victory Day celebrations.
The DMTCL, a government-owned company, is implementing the 20.1km long metro rail project. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network will connect Uttara and Motijheel through Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Agargaon, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar and Shahbagh.
Around 60,000 passengers will be able to move, in an hour, by using the metro rail.
In 2021, an estimated 500,000 people will commute by the network every day.
Commuters will be able to travel the entire distance in less than 40 minutes at an average speed of 100kmh.
