A Dhaka City Corporation councillor-elect has been arrested on charges of assaulting a law enforcer.
Shakhawat Hossain Shawkat, the Awami League-backed candidate who has been elected to represent the Ward-23 of the Dhaka North city, was arrested late on Monday (Feb 3).
He was held from the capital's Rampura on charges of assaulting a Special Branch inspector after a case was started by the victim, said Assistant Commissioner Zulfiqer Ali of the Dhaka metro police's Khilgaon zone.
Shawkat, who serves as ruling party's North Ward-23 unit general secretary, has been taken to the Detective Branch's offices for initial interrogation, added the senior police officer.
