The police have arrested one person over the attack on BNP mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain’s campaign in Dhaka’s Gopibagh.
A Detective Branch team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 47-year-old Ariful Islam early on Thursday (Jan 30).
Ariful is Ishraque’s personal secretary and a former activist of BNP’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra Dal, DMP Additional Commissioner Abdul Baten said in a media call on Thursday (Jan 30).
Baten said that Ariful was arrested with a foreign gun and 50 rounds of ammunition and he has confessed to firing at Ishraque’s campaign.
He said that the CCTV footage, as well as footage from electronic and print media on Jan 26, was analysed to identify the shooter.
He said that the shell casing of the bullets found on the scene match Ariful’s gun.
Meanwhile, Ishraque’s media team member Khurshid Alam said that he does not have any personal secretary and Ariful was just a supporter of the party.
