The DNA samples collected from the evidence of the crime scene of the rape of a Dhaka University student in the capital's Kurmitola have matched with the lone suspect, says Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
"We had profiled two DNA samples and one of these matched with [suspect] Majnu," CID Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sheikh Nazmul Alam said on Saturday (Jan 25).
"We have sent the test report to the investigation officer of the case," he added.
Majnu, who is now behind bars, confessed to raping the victims before a Dhaka court on Jan 16 after being produced to it on completion of a remand.
On Jan 9, a Dhaka court put the 30-year-old suspect on a seven-day remand two days after he was arrested from Dhaka's Shewra rail crossing at Kurmitola near the crime scene.
According to the case filed by the victim’s father, the second-year DU student was being followed by the suspect after she got off from the university's bus at Kurmitola stoppage. He then dragged her into a bush in a nearby secluded place and raped her sometime between 7 and 8pm.
The suspect also took away the victim’s mobile phone, a watch, a bag and Tk 2,000 in cash, according to the case details.
After she regained consciousness at 10pm, she visited her friend’s house by auto-rickshaw and told her about the incident. Later, her classmates arrived and took her to the university’s hall. She was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital after midnight.
