Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called for strict enforcement of laws in the transport sector to prevent the growing casualties on roads across the country.
The Dhaka-based private think-tank also urged to ensure transparency and accountability to the transport sector stakeholders ending all conflict of interest.
TIB made the call through a media statement issued on Tuesday (Jul 31).
“The transport sector is caught with a myriad of problems and irregularities including utmost negligence of the authorities, lack of strict enforcement of laws, lack of good governance in organisations, syndication at higher-level,” the statement quoted TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman.
Citing a 2009 study, Iftekharuzzaman said, “Regulatory body Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has hardly played any role on vehicle control over the past ten years. The BRTA and other bodies are apparently being run under the care of transport owner and worker organisations.”
Illegal patronising to different organisations and people must be stopped in addition to ensuring transparency, accountability and good governance to the transport sector originations,” said Iftekharuzzaman.
