Police can't escape responsibility for custodial death: DMP chief

Police cannot deny the responsibility of suspect’s death in its custody, says Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam.
“We are inquiring the incident,” Shaiqul told media on Monday (Jan 20) after Bangladesh Police Service Association paid tribute at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the capital’s Dhanmondi.
“Initially, the incident was reported as suicide to me. However, police can’t deny responsibility,” he said.
Shafiqul said that a three-strong inquiry has been opened over the incident.
He also assured punitive actions against responsible officials of the force if the negligence of duty found.Abu Bakkar Siddique
Death of a suspect in custody was reported from Tejgaon Industrial police station on Sunday (Jan 19).
Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) official Abu Bakkar Siddique Babu allegedly killed himself inside the lockup after he was arrested on Saturday (Jan 19).
