A group of Dhaka University students have taken to the streets demanding rescheduling voting for the elections to the two Dhaka city corporations slated for Dec 30.
Hours after the High Court turned down a writ petition seeking deferment on Tuesday (Jan 14), students started demonstrating around 5pm at the Shahbagh intersection causing traffic to be suspended on one of the busiest roads in capital Dhaka.
The blockade caused severe traffic gridlock to the entire paths towards New Elephant Road, Farmgate intersection, Gulistan area and DU entryway.
Earlier in the day, the High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam scrapped the plea by a lawyer, which called for the polls to be rescheduled to another date as it coincides with the Hindu festival of Saraswati Puja.
The court's decision means the polls will now go ahead as scheduled by the election commission on Dec 22 last year.
