File photos shows Attorney General Mahbubey AlamThe government will reconsider BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s punishment which sent her to jail for corruption if an appeal seeks to suspend the order, said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
He made the remarks at a media briefing at his Supreme Court offices on Tuesday (Jan 14).
“Usually, a punishment order is suspended when a considerable time had been spent in prison; under special consideration, the sentence can be discontinued.”
“If defence can file such a case, the government can reconsider her (Khaleda’s) punishment,” said Mahbubey Alam.
He added that the case may be filed under the criminal act 401 (1). If defence can prove that she already served a reasonable period of time in jail, the government will look into the matter.
Earlier, at a press conference held on Jan 9, senior lawyer Khndokar Mahbub Hossain, said: “As per 401 (1) of the criminal law, we demand a suspension of Khaleda Zia’s punishment and treatment overseas as per her wish.”
