A suspected drug peddler has been killed in capital Dhaka in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as a ‘shootout’.
Two others have sustained gunshot wounds in the incident, reported early on Sunday (Jan 12) at the city's Malibagh area.
The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Syed Iqbal Ahmed, who the elite police unit said was named in seven narcotics cases.
His wife Rafiza Jasmine, 30, and brother-in-law Masnur Hasan, 22, are being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with gunshot wounds.
"A RAB team conducted a stake-out near the Shohagh Paribahan bus counter at Malibagh on a tip-off of a yaba consignment from Cox's Bazar," said Superintendent Muhammad Mohiuddin Faruqi of the RAB-2.
According to him, the suspects took an Uber after getting off a bus from Cox's Bazar.
"They opened fire when the RAB approached, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate," Faruqi said.
Over 100,000 yaba tablets, a pistol and ammunition, 25 mobile phones, bank cheque books and Tk 600,000 in cash were found on the suspects, according to the RAB-2 company commander.
